Natural materials are basic to the baskets I weave: rattan reed, juniper roots, salt cedar, bamboo, brown ash, and a variety of willow-some imported and some gathered from the arroyos and bosques of New Mexico where I live.
Color and texture come from the material itself, its natural hues varied by the season, mellowed and ripened with age. Everything is woven wet, then finished with an herbal oil.
During the past 10 years, I have continued to make "traditional" baskets, sturdy in shape, form, and function, rich in their simplicity. Since 1996 I have extended my creative efforts into "contemporary" basket work, emphasizing movement in the forms I design through the gentle manipulation of the materials in my hands and the use of various weaving techniques. These pieces are woven as wall pieces and free standing sculptures, ranging in size to 9.5 feet in height.
At the end of each work session, I hang or stand the finished and unfinished pieces and leave the studio. Yet I always return later in the day to look in at the pieces so that I may think of them in the space just as I am falling asleep or coming awake. For me, the making of baskets is both meditative and exciting-the rhythm of weaving, the feel of the basket in my hands, and the possibility of what is next.
