Artist's Statement
Karen Hipscher
A newcomer to the Placitas area, but no stranger to New Mexico… My recent
photographic and video work could be considered a kind of archaeology, but
of the present moment. I wander deserted desert areas on the outskirts of
cities searching for what remains of the present or what is cast aside by it.
I use cameras to study and document material traces and to draw
relationships between what is here and not here. I am most interested in the
lives of what we discard, try to forget, or make abject and the edges where
they continue to exist.
Themes of displacement, exile, migration, gender violence, decay, and
dystopia are often active in my work. In making images, I am also
continually searching for meaning, connection, and possibilities for survival.
