About the Artist
I have always been fascinated by the natural beauty of wood. Growing up on a ranch
in West Texas, my brothers and I spent much of our summers building fences. The
cedar corner-post structures with notched braces and twisted wire were works of art
to me. During the school years, my favorite elective was Wood Shop.
My first formal wood carving “Jim and I” was created while at Princeton University
working on a Ph. D. in Chemical Engineering. I designed and carved the piece
specifically for the cover photograph for my second book of poetry which carries the
same title.
Over the past few years, inspired by the artists of Placitas, woodcarving has become
an ever-increasing part of my pleasures. Winemaking, photography, poetry,
woodcarving — not a bad life.
